Mental Health Awareness Month is a critical time for deep reflection and active involvement, especially in minority communities. My own journey with mental health, and therapy, has faced unique challenges and led to meaningful personal growth.
Understanding the Taboos Around Mental Health in Black Culture
Mental health and therapy discussions are often avoided in Black communities. This is due to historical distrust of medical institutions, cultural norms prioritizing stoicism, and a shortage of culturally competent healthcare providers. These factors have long prevented open conversations about mental health, making many suffer in silence. Addressing these taboos is essential as it opens the way to more effective care and understanding.
Early Challenges and Building a Shield

Growing up in a small rural town, the norms of racial division further complicated my interactions. My mom, sister, and grandmother raised me in a loving single-parent household where my mother worked tirelessly to provide for us. I struggled to connect with Black male peers who were mostly interested in sports and girls. My attempts to fit in with predominantly white peers were often met with distance, enhancing my feelings of isolation. Despite these challenges, I found a sense of belonging and acceptance among Black females. They shared a similar emotional and empathetic resonance with me, though my nerdy interests and introspective nature still set me apart. My intelligence became my shield; it allowed me to cope with being labeled as different. This ensured that although you might call me weird, but no one could ever call me stupid.
Managing Anxiety and Stress

Also, the intense isolation and stress during the pandemic led to my first panic attack in New York City. This daunting experience highlighted the need for effective strategies to manage anxiety and stress. This also underscored the crucial role of therapy in providing these tools.
The Corporate Experience and Its Lessons

In the workplace, the pressure to excel, amplified by my minority status, required me to adopt an almost flawless professional facade. As a result, this intense demand taught me critical lessons about authenticity and the importance of vulnerability. I developed resilience and a strong work ethic, but I also realized how vital it is to relax and be myself at home, building genuine personal connections.
The Role of Therapy in My Journey
- Statistic: A significant portion of U.S. adults, approximately 44.2%, who needed mental health treatment reported that they did not receive it due to various reasons, including cost barriers and limited availability of services. Most importantly, Finding the right therapist was crucial. Friends and family, while supportive, often reinforced a limiting “accept me as I am” attitude rather than encouraging growth. This led me to Dr. Dione Bates after trying several therapists. Dr. Bates has been instrumental in my healing process, introducing transformative therapeutic techniques:
- Inner Child Work: Focusing on healing past traumas and rediscovering suppressed joy.
- Managing Emotions and Reactions: Developing mindfulness in my responses, significantly enhancing my relationships.
- Challenging My Thinking: Encouraging me to critically reflect on my beliefs, which has brought clarity and peace.
Navigating Relationships

Additionally, therapy has been instrumental in helping me heal from past relational wounds. It also gave me the tools to enter new relationships with a healthier perspective. I’ve learned invaluable lessons about compatibility, communication, and emotional awareness, which are crucial for sustaining meaningful connections.
